SCHAUFENSTER #3:
The Listening Protocol – Kollektiv International Totem

With The Listening Protocol, Kollektiv International Totem transforms the sounding architecture SCHAUFENSTER by Dimitri de Perrot / Studio DdP into a resonant head – a space where language, frequency, and thought slide into one another. A speculative group therapy between human and machine, between the conscious and the unconscious noise in between.

SCHAUFENSTER #3:

The transformable sonic architecture SCHAUFENSTER is inhabited in its third edition by Kollektiv International Totem. For the ongoing project series initiated by Dimitri de Perrot / Studio DdP, the collective develops its own work within this resonant box.

The Listening Protocol is a sound-based performance for three performers inside a multi-channel transducer system — or, more simply, three people attempting to conduct a group therapy session.

The Listening Protocol transforms the Schaufenster structure into a speculative head – a resonant skull in which voice, machine noise, and subconscious thought attempt to understand one another. Through controlled vibrations, text fragments, and neural sound modulations, the performers enact an unlicensed therapy of listening to their own minds.

Structured in different sessions, the piece explores the practice of radical honesty, the fiction of care, and the sonic materiality of thinking.

The audience encounters the box as an interface – a surface through which thoughts, impulses, and unconscious leaks become faintly audible. While the audience perceives the full score, the performers receive only traces and tremors of their own minds – signals that remain out of reach. Speech becomes frequency, frequency becomes a kind of thought, and somewhere in between, one forgets who was supposed to be the therapist.

SCHAUFENSTER is a transformable instrument – a sounding architecture used and reinterpreted by artists from different disciplines and cultural backgrounds. Initiated in 2021 by Dimitri de Perrot and Studio DdP, the project continues as an ongoing series in the greater Zurich area.

ABOUT kollektiv iиterиatioиal totem (KIT)

kollektiv iиterиatioиal totem (KIT) is an interdisciplinary ensemble based in Zurich, founded by sound artists Kay Zhang, Nuriia Khasenova, and Léo Collin. Rooted in contemporary music, KIT operates at the intersections of sound art, performance, visual arts, scenography, and technology.

Their projects fuse composition, spatial design, and narrative elements into immersive experiences that dissolve the boundaries between concert, installation, and performance. Each work is created in close collaboration with artists from diverse disciplines and explores new forms of collective creation and sonic imagination.

KIT has performed at renowned venues such as Volksbühne Berlin, Gare du Nord Basel, Dampfzentrale Bern, and Gessnerallee Zürich, as well as internationally at Monash University (Melbourne), Potocki Paterson Art Gallery (Wellington), and the Maritime Museum (Hong Kong).

With the support of the City and Canton of Zurich and numerous Swiss foundations, kollektiv iиterиatioиal totem continues to expand its artistic practice – as a laboratory for experimental music, performative thinking, and transdisciplinary collaboration.
